Seychellois from all walks of life are being invited to join President Ramkalawan and top health leaders in the Indian Ocean and Africa in a big walk against Obesity at Beau Vallon this weekend.
This event, named the ‘Stop Obesity Beach Walk’, aims to raise awareness about the importance of physical activity and healthy lifestyles in combating obesity.
With the growing prevalence of obesity in Seychelles and its associated health risks, Health Seychelles believes it is crucial to engage the community in promoting positive lifestyle changes.
Many health leaders and top regional WHO officials who are here to attend a SIDS Africa health meeting will join in the event along Beau Vallon beach, which will take place on Sunday 24th March by the Savoy Hotel at 5pm.
Among them will be the Regional Director of the World Health Organisation, Dr Matshidiso Moeti, ministers of health, heads of delegation and delegates from five small island developing states (Seychelles, Mauritius, Comoros, Cabo Verde and Sao Tome and Principe) plus Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar.
A statement from the Ministry of Health states: “This exceptional event will highlight the significance of tackling obesity and the health benefits of regular physical activity”.
Seychelles launched its “Stop Obesity” campaign in mid-October 2023 when President Ramkalawan and his wife Linda led an event in Victoria which highlighted the need to tackle the Obesity epidemic in the country.
Since the launch, the campaign has gained significant momentum, drawing attention to the critical health issues associated with obesity. Various ministries have since been organizing their own events.
The beach walk on Sunday comes as part of the ongoing efforts to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining a healthy weight.
The Ministry of Health statement goes on to say: “Obesity poses serious health risks, including an increased risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. By promoting physical activity and healthy lifestyles, the country can reduce the prevalence of obesity and improve overall health outcomes.
“The World Health Organization (WHO) has long been at the forefront of global efforts to address obesity, providing support and guidance to member countries in developing strategies to tackle this pressing health issue.
“WHO's involvement underscores the importance of a collaborative approach in combating obesity and promoting public health initiatives. The Stop Obesity Walk serves as a demonstration of leaders commitment to prioritizing physical activity and healthy living.
“The Ministry of Health invites all Seychellois to join in this important event and show support for the fight against obesity. Whether walking or jogging, participation will make a difference in promoting a healthier future for all”.
